Viberti Langhe DOC Nebbiolo

The grape varietal Nebbiolo, thought to hail from Italy’s northwestern Piedmonte region, produces some of the world’s finest, long lived, intense Barolo wines.  But when this Nebbiolo is grown in the Langhe region, just south of the Barolo communes, it produces a more approachable and youthful expression, with less oak influence and more dominant primary fruit characteristics.   

Viberti Giovanni is a long-standing Piedmonte producer, celebrating 100 years of wine making in 2023.  They make Barolo’s and Barbera but the Viberti Langhe Nebbiolo they produce is great to open with friends or to gift to a special someone this Valentine’s Day.  The nose is vibrant with morello and tart cherry alongside a signature floral character, subtle dried leaves and a hint of spice and earth.  The palate is medium bodied with concentration of flavour and polished tannins.  I think this Nebbiolo calls for food.  Nothing too serious as this wine is ready to drink young (this isn’t a Barolo after all!) so enjoy it with herb rubbed roast chicken with a mushroom risotto or charcuterie or really anything that is drizzled with truffle oil. Spicy, flavourful Asian dishes would be a fun option to try as well.
