Waipara West Two Terraces Pinot Noir 2022
Even though summer is just in full swing this doesn’t change me from wanting to have a good red wine. Something that is great with a touch of a chill on it – sounds like pinot noir
The trading name of the Tutton Sienko Hill is a family partnership and Waipara West is the brand name of their wines. The winery was started in 1989, when a group of 4 family members purchased property that, while it wasn’t good for raising sheep, would be perfect for the growing of grapes. The winery is situated further inland than most wineries which means it is hotter and less prone to frost. The vineyard’s natural amphitheatres allow a wide range of varieties to grow and ripen, creating incredibly diverse flavours. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand, which provides a framework for the best viticultural practices to protect the environment while efficiently producing premium grapes. They do not use insecticides, residual herbicides or artificial fertiliser and are continually extending their areas of native bush on the land and adjoining river bed. It was only after some investigation as to what could potentially grow in specific areas, that they also found out that the property had been in the family some hundreds years earlier.
An earthy wine driven by aromas of mixed cherries, raspberries, savoury herbs, dry forest floors and hints of woodsmoke. A mixture of crunchy cherries and ripe red currants give a juiciness that is balanced by a vibrant acidity, a lively mineral mouthfeel, underlying brown spice characteristics and fine chalky tannins, resulting in a overall deliciously salivating wine. Perfect slightly chilled and perhaps served with BBQ lamb souvlaki.
